Join Routes as a Writer

Commitment: minimum 6 hours in group workshops and delivery of a script for performance in December 2019

We are looking for a writer to join our team from October to November 2019. This is a paid role for an experienced writer/dramaturg to create a script for performance by a group of 10 to 15 women from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds. You will work closely with the Director-Facilitator, attending at least three workshops at the Arcola Theatre as part of the devising process.

The role

  • Attend and participate in at least three Routes workshops to get to know participants and closely observe the devising process

  • Communicate with Director-Facilitator about the devising process and script writing

  • Deliver a full script, directly influenced by the devising process, to a deadline agreed with Director-Facilitator and Routes team

  • Ensure that Routes aims are met and upheld in the writing process and final script

    • Creating a joyful, inclusive and patient environment

    • Fostering personal growth and confidence-building

    • Encouraging new social connections and improved wellbeing

  • Ensure that script is appropriate for participants with varying levels of spoken English and theatrical experience

Our requirements

  • Full commitment to the project and aims of Routes

  • Proficient English level (spoken and written)

  • Previous experience in playwriting required

  • Previous experience working with non-experienced theatre makers preferred

  • Previous experience working with EAL (English as an Additional Language) preferred

  • We particularly welcome applications from women of colour and/or women with experience of migration
